Relocation to Shanghai: Overview

An international move can be particularly stressful for a family that has a child with special needs.  SEC can help you determine, which, if any, international school can best meet your child’s needs.  We can give you specific recommendations and an honest appraisal of what you should expect.  If appropriate, we can contact schools on your behalf.

Unlike countries such as the United States, where special education services are mandated, international schools are not required to provide special education services.  Almost all the international schools explicitly state that they are not able to provide services to children with special needs, however, many of the schools have learning support and have made exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

Based on our knowledge from having consulted with many parents and having consulted in almost all of the international schools, we believe there are three situations that can be especially troubling for parents:
Having your child turned down by an international school
Having your child accepted to an international school only to be later exited when the school realizes they can’t meet your child’s needs
Having your child accepted to an international school which is not able to or has no intent to provide individualized special education services or will not make needed accommodations
