Best Practices       Mainstreaming in Shanghai

The Creative Garden Mountain Pine Program is for children seven years old and above.  As much as possible, children are grouped according to ability and age.  Morning sessions tend to focus more on academics, based on an expanded North American curriculum, adapted for an international population with special needs.  Afternoon sessions tend to focus more on functional life skills.  Throughout the day, social/communication skills are tightly integrated in all activities and there is a strong emphasis on using positive reward systems to encourage appropriate behavior.

The Creative Garden Spring Bamboo Early Intervention Program is for children thee years old through six years old.  Research suggests that early intervention is important for young children with special needs, especially in helping them build their cognitive and communication abilities.    Everything done in the program, from the moment the children arrive to the time when they leave is purpose driven.  Play time, art, snack, music, lunch, reading, and recess are all used to develop appropriate social/communication skills.
